The legends of Hearthstone
After speaking about some of the most key cards we will be losing due to the new standard format rotation, today we will be looking at who has simply been the best in Hearthstone up and till this date. There are many contenders for this spot in my opinion, for example, the likes of Purple from Gamers Origin, Thijs from G2, Strifecro from Cloud9 or even Tiddler from China could be in contention for this spot. Recently we asked Simon ‘Sottle’ Welch, a player for compLexity along with being an avid caster about his opinion on who’s the top three so far.
"It's hard to say as there are so many ways to evaluate, but just going purely from competitive history the first name that jumps out is Firebat, he took the World Championship and then really made it his own in the following year by taking down multiple other majors and premier tournaments, cementing his position as the best in the world at the time. Outside of Firebat, I'd go with Lifecoach and Kolento for similar reasons, they're two of the only players I can think of that have gone through a period where they seemed unbeatable, true periods of dominance that are so impressive in a game where consistency is notoriously difficult".
So let’s introduce you to who these three are. Starting with Firebat, he was the first ever world champion at Blizzcon 2014 and is much known for his wide variety of deck choice. He’s taken Mill Rouge, Ramp Druid and Freeze Priest all to the same event and if you follow the Metagame enough, you know you shouldn’t when you’re trying to win a $250,000 tournament. Previously he has been known as a very consistent Druid player with him taking an unbeaten streak in the final of Blizzcon against Tiddler and 3-0’ing him in the last hero standing format. Within more recent times, he has matched the Meta very well and recently brought a lot of aggro decks and interesting tech choices to counter to other aggressive decks like Secret Paladin and Aggro Shaman.
Let’s move onto Lifecoach, often known as ‘Ropecoach’, he is known for taking his time within hearthstone and to play to the most methodical point possible. His deck choices being the most controlling ones possible with the likes of Handlock being a staple in his choices. Since he was a very established Poker player, he is known for planning ahead in Hearthstone. The most known clip was a game between himself and Trump where Lifecoach was roping at Turns 1-4, with Trump getting frustrated, he was leaving his chair between turns and getting cocky. With Lifecoach winning the game by turn 6 as a Patron, it shows he is one of the best players in the world so far. With him also winning a streak of the tournament during the summer of 2014, he was most dominate when the likes of Control Warrior, Handlock and even Midrange Paladin was the staple of the Meta.
Left for last, my third best player in Hearthstone would be Kolento, from Ukraine. He has been one of the most consistent threats in tournaments since the beginning when Hearthstone didn’t even have a World Championship. Kolento went through a tear between March to May of 2014 winning pretty much every LAN and beating some of the best in the world including Lifecoach along with Firebat who we have named as some of the best in the world. The only reason he is maybe not higher in the list is due to his fall off after this time period with him only winning one more tournament up and till this date which was the WCA Qualifier.
